The Crack of Doom – Week of Dec 11, 2006

It’s two weeks until Christmas, and the human Doomers are getting ready to leave much of the work to Igor over the holidays. Twists will be hithering and thithering off and on from now to January, and the John Ms will be pretty busy with family too. My kid brother, the one I mentioned in the Nov 30th post on fantasy RE, is bringing his book tour (oops, three countries, just one year!) to Maritime Canada this week. Doom Castle will need to wait while I catch up on my nieces! :)

Doomers, we know you’ve got lots of RE knowledge to share with each other, so go wild in the Reply box and we’ll check in as often as we can.

John! Your brother is the writer of “Understanding Comics”? Wow! If so I’m impressed – excellent piece of work (Yes, I’ve read it!) :) ))

One thing though – you’re Canadian, and he was born in the U.S.? I guess that happens! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_McCloud)

In fact he will be coming through the door in about 5 minutes (I’ll pass on my regards). I left home when he was about 8 years old, so our paths rarely cross. We grew up outside Boston.

I figure briefly in My Obsession with Chess and may have been part of the inspiration for Ignatius Rumbolt Bellows (I did suggest part of the name).

The iTulip piece had this quote.

Gordon Chang, author of The Coming Collapse of China, said the regime had embarked on a suicidal course, living from one day to the next from fear that 140m footloose urban migrants could turn violent.

This correlates with a recent comment by dryfly at Calculated Risk.

Realize as we contemplate all this, the trains haven’t stop running from rural China to say Guangdong or Shanghai. Every year some thing like 20-30 million migrate from rural China to those coastal cities looking for work… it is the largest migration the world has ever seen … and they haven’t got the memos from the Fed yet.

    I’m starting to sense a pattern. :(

Thanks for all that new stuff. I hope Doomsters will find them here for the next while. I’m updating S/W over here and Bill Gates wants me to reboot my workstation every other minute. :(

Hopefully I’ll be able to start working the sidebar “before the cows come home”!
