Canada Day

No gloom and doom on the sidebar today from this blogger, anyway. Housing Doom Canada is so taking the day off. Bright and early, we’re going down to the Grand Parade to sing this bit of music [1] before heading off to pancakes served by Halifax’s Mayor Peter Kelly.

The seagulls are appropriate. The M clan now extends from Halifax to Montreal to Vancouver.

Next it’s off to the Metro Centre to perform as part of a 90-voice back-up with this young lady. [2]

Measha’s professional singing debut was actually as a 19-year-old at the same venue (Mrs M recalls all the little M’s expressing doubts about an Opera act at the Tattoo!) Growing up in New Brunswick she’d always wanted to perform at the Metro Centre, inspired by a sister who’d come down to participate with one of the gymnastic teams. Last Thursday she turned 30, and is returning to the site of her first big gig. There will be performances every day until July 8th. Measha is going toe-to-toe with a Bass, Tenor, plus hundreds & hundreds of bag-pipes, drums, brass, and woodwind instruments. The choir is betting on the Soprano. ;)

I should add that for all those that are not aware of Canada Day customs, traditionally this is a time for all Canadians to wash out their igloos, wax their canoes, and release (for one day only) any beavers caught in traps.

    Happy Canada Day! ;)

Sometimes you can’t make it up. In this case the truth really is weirder than fiction.

“First day of July marks moving day in Quebec”, CTV, July 1, 2007.

The government at the time believed a provincial moving day would not disrupt the school year of children.

The long-standing tradition annually leaves Quebecers scrambling to find commercial movers and friends to help them hoist sofas and coffee tables.

“Montreal is the only place you’ll ever see someone walking down the street on July 1 with a couch on their back,” Jeffrey Hackett, 26, told the Canadian Press.

    John -
Interesting “Moving Day” custom in Quebec. I wonder why the government decreed this one day as the day when leases expire… what’s wrong with the last day of any other month?

I’ve never been to Quebec, but I hear it’s a beautiful place with a very distinct culture. Nevermind the French language, some silly examples I’ve heard (why does everything always boil down to traffic habits?)…by law, no right turns at red lights allowed (even if the coast is clear); if somebody can almost fit into a street parking spot but not quite, they will not hesitate to force their car in by pushing back/forward the bookend-cars that are in their way. :)

John, did you ever hear of the “I am Canadian” ads a few years back by the Molson’s company? Somebody did a very clever little spoof of it (It might be on youtube or such) called, “I am French Canadian”. Hilarious stuff..!

It’s really too bad this ’05 bootleg ran out of gas before the French bit, but you’ll get much the flavour (right spelling just this once) of it :)
