Las Vegas “Foreclosure Kittens”

I’m an avid animal lover, and one of the sadder parts of the housing bust for me is how many animals have been abandoned along with the houses.  Las Vegas is especially having a tough time with a large number of “foreclosure kittens”:

According to the Las Vegas Sun hundreds of former pets have been roaming the Las Vegas valley in recent years and by some counts this year has turned out twice as many.

The Nevada Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has formed a “Feline Foster Force” to help connect cat lovers with deserted pets and their offspring.

“The need is incredible,” Doug Duke of the NSPCA told the Sun, “We have more than 200 little kittens with no mothers.” That’s one-fourth the 800 rabbits, cats, dogs, and other pets at the no-kill shelter. “We’ve been challenged but we’ve never been challenged to this extent,” Duke says.

Do you ever think that the little kittens and puppies are cute, but then they grow up and are more trouble?  Fostering young animals is a great way to keep in little kittens without the long term commitment.  I encourage animal lovers in Las Vegas to check it out.  It’s a fun way to make a difference.

Oh, and Las Vegas isn’t the only one with the problem.  Shelters all over are struggling with fewer adoptions, fewer donations, and more abandoned animals.
