Portal 2 – Off Topic

We’ve been experiencing some technical difficulties here at HD; we are currently testing a fix. Rather than a generic “This is a test” message, I have chosen something (hopefully) a little more interesting. You may have noticed some of the advertising for Portal 2 on various billboards and other locations. For those unfamiliar with the “Portal” franchise, it is a physics-based puzzle with quite a bit of dark humor in it. Despite being only a few hours long, it is one of the most critically acclaimed games of all time. They recently released a short promo clip – for those…

“Las Vegas? Surely someone is spiking the Kool-Aid.”

The Las Vegas government has announced approval to build an amusement park along the strip. Not content with the usual garish, over-the-top theme prevalent throughout the rest of Sin City, the developer has decided to construct a 500-foot ferris wheel, making it the third-largest wheel of its kind in the world, and the largest one in the western hemisphere. In addition to the Ferris Wheel, it would include six additional rides, a 20,000+ square foot conference center and nearly 150,000 square feet of new retail space. Apparently, it’s not enough to be the gambling mecca of the Northern Hemisphere –…

Quantitative Easing Explained

Just had this forwarded to me. It’s a little oversimplified, but it is a great introduction.

Sidebar functionality restored

The issue with the sidebar has been fixed.  All the old links are archived, and new ones should begin appearing soon. Software (like WordPress, which powers this site) is designed based on how it is expected to be used.  Links are all handled together, rather than in pages, since it’s faster and it was anticipated that only a few links would be in the system at a time. We had 37,864 links in our system, and WordPress was not happy.  The links in the relevant articles section of the sidebar are frequently updated with relevant and breaking news – if…

More internet drama

This is likely to be the last post on the "Resulting Trust" drama, but I felt that this was worth reposting.  HousingDoom is committed to an ethical, upfront approach to reporting; we do not yield to legal threats, especially bogus ones from people who have delusions of legal grandeur. Email: You may have thought what was meant was that your posting of the video was in error. But, from the standpoint of what was observed, you simply pointed others to the Youtube video, which is perfectly acceptable. What is NOT acceptable is the re-posting of the press release accompanying the…

Auto "bailout" fails

Well, it appears the auto bailout is dead: "It’s over with," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said of congressional efforts this year just before the Democratic proposal to extend up to $14 billion to the stricken industry fell short of the needed votes on a procedural motion. The United Auto Workers union has been blamed for failing to reach a deal: The late night development followed intense discussions on a possible 11th-hour compromise that participants said dissolved over proposed wage concessions by the United Auto Workers union. "We were three words away from a deal," said Sen. Bob Corker, a…

Presidential Election

Here at HousingDoom, we generally try to stay fairly apolitical – we point out stupidity regardless of which side of the aisle it may be on.  We also try to avoid endorsing specific candidates. This election will affect a number of things over the next 4 years; it is vital that people understand their candidate, and what they are voting for.  It is in the spirit of disclosure that I post this video. On July 2nd, 2008, Obama made a speech in Colorado Springs.  There were a number of things said which are deeply concerning.  Of further concern, the officially released…

We’ve noticed a significant number of users have been accessing Housing Doom on their mobile phones, and have launched a new mobile version of our site. The new site is optimized for mobile phones (including a special version for the iPhone) – it should load significantly faster. You can also check the latest Housing Doom news by sending the text message "Doom" to 41411 – it will reply with the title and beginning of the latest article. We are also accepting advertisers for the mobile site.

HousingDoom under spam attack; maintainance.

From the desk of the System Administrator (not Twist): HousingDoom has been under assault from spammers the past few days – if you use our handy RSS feeds, you might have noticed some of the spam. We have upgraded to the newest version of WordPress, and it should prevent exploits of this kind. Please let us know if you experience any issues (or notice ads for pharmaceuticals showing up all of a sudden).
